How to Import Course Content in Canvas


Do not import the same course content more than once, as this may duplicate or overwrite existing content. If you need assistance with importing content, please contact the IT Help Desk.

Copy a Master Shell

If you need assistance importing a Master Shell into your course, please complete the "Request Course Import" form.

 

Copy All Content from a Previously Taught Course

If you are copying content from a previously taught course, refer to the Canvas Support guide "How do I copy content from another Canvas course using the Course Import tool?"

To check the status of your course import or to view import error messages, review the Canvas Support guide "How do I view the status of current and prior course imports?"

After completing the course import, we recommend the following next steps:

 

Copy Specific Content From Another Course

If you want to import select content from another course, refer to the Canvas Support guide "How do I select specific content as part of a course import?"

When importing quizzes or assignments that include rubrics, be sure also to select and import all associated "Question Banks" and/or "Rubrics." If these items are not included during the import process, they will not be attached to the quiz or assignment after import.

Create a Welcome Video


To create a welcome video for your students, follow the instructions on the "Welcome Video" page in the Instructor Information Station Canvas course.

Review Course Files


To review and manage files in your course, refer to the Canvas Support guide "How do I view course files?"

If you need to restrict files or folders so they are not visible to students, follow the Canvas Support guide "How do I restrict files and folders?"

  • Important: Be careful not to restrict image files, as doing so will prevent them from displaying for students.
