DEV 101 is a self-paced, blended course designed to provide online instructors with the tools and knowledge to create an engaging and enriching online experience for our FSW students! DEV 101 introduces faculty to important considerations when designing an online course and the ways the FSW instructional design team can support you throughout the development process. This course is not about how to teach or deliver online courses, but rather about the design elements that are known to set online students up for success. That said, implementing the strategies and tools learned in this course are very likely to improve the online teaching experience!
DEV 101 requires participation in activities both in Canvas and in synchronous workshops. You will learn about Quality Matters (QM), the QM Higher Ed Rubric and the faculty-driven review process adopted by FSW. In addition to QM, you will also engage in activities to raise awareness about access to course materials, universal design, open educational sources and best practices for role modeling academic integrity in your course. DEV 101 is expected to take a combined total of approximately 30 hrs, but since it is self-paced you choose when you want to participate and at the pace that is right for you.
At the conclusion of DEV 101, participants will be able to:
- Describe the procedures and policies for developing online courses and course materials at FSW.
- Explain the importance of instructional design for online courses.
- Align course objectives, module objectives, instructional materials, activities, tools and assessments.
- Identify different types of learner disabilities, accommodations and assistive technologies.
- Utilize ADA standards and Universal Design to develop online courses and materials.
- Apply the Quality Matters (QM) rubric to an online or blended course.
- Select appropriate Open Education Resources (OER) while considering Creative Commons, Copyright, Fair Use and the TEACH Act.
To enroll in DEV 101, you should already be certified to teach online courses. View the Online Teaching Certification List to determine if you have completed FSW's Online Teaching Certification.
Note: Completion of DEV 101 does not guarantee that you will be selected to develop an online course at FSW. If you are interested in developing an online course, please speak with your Dean or Department Chair.
