How To: Configure Authenticator Applications (iOS and Android)

When you are prompted to establish and set up your Mobile Authenticator, you can use one of the following authenticator options. The main step will be to locate adding an account using a QR code in your app. Whenever you log in to an FSW Account, you will be prompted to provide a newly generated code from the authenticator app. Please do not remove the app, as you will need it to access the code each time you log into an FSW account. The app will generate a new 6-digit code every 30 seconds. Please type in the 6-digit code into the "One-time code" entry box within the 30-second window, or wait until the new code appears. (It is referred to as a "One-time code" because it is a code that is valid for only one login session).

Google Authenticator App


Download and install the Google Authenticator App from the Google Play Store.

Or

Download and install the Google Authenticator App from the iOS Store.

Open the Google Authenticator App. If this is the first time you have ever used the Google Authenticator app, you will be prompted to set up your first account.

Please do not sign in with an account. This may cause issues in the future.

 

First Time Set-Up

 

Please select "Get Started"

Please select the "Use Google Authenticator without an account" button.

Then, tap on "Scan a QR code."

You may need to allow the authenticator permission to access your camera. If so, click "OK" (or "Allow" on Android devices).

Point your phone at the QR code on the login page to add the account.

You will see the account added and a one-time code underneath.

Android users: If prompted, tap the "Add Account" button to finish the setup on your device.

 

With the authenticator now set up, go back to your FSW "Mobile Authenticator Setup" page, enter the "one-time code" into the entry box under "One-time code," and enter a device name into the entry box under "Device Name."

Adding an Account

If you have already been using the Google Authenticator app, you can take the following steps to add your FSW account to it.

 

With the Google Authenticator app open, tap the "+" button in the lower right-hand corner.

Then, tap the "Scan a QR code" option.

Point your phone at the QR code on the login page to add the account.

You will see the account added and a one-time code underneath.

Android users: If prompted, tap the "Add Account" button to finish the setup on your device.

FreeOTP App (IOS)


First Time Set-Up

If this is the first time you have ever used the FreeOTP Authenticator app, you will be prompted to set up your first account.

Download and install the FreeOTP Authenticator app from the iOS App Store.

Click on the QR code icon in the upper right-hand corner.

You may be prompted to allow the authenticator permission to access your camera. Select the "OK" button.

Point your phone at the QR code on the login page to add the account.

You will be prompted to choose an icon to represent your account. You can select your desired icon by tapping on it.

After selecting your desired icon, tap the "Next" button in the upper right-hand corner.

(1) Select your desired security option and then (2) click "Next."

You will see the FSW token added.

Tap on the FSW token to display the one-time code.

With the authenticator now set up, go back to your FSW "Mobile Authenticator Setup" page, enter the "one-time code" into the entry box under "One-time code," and enter a device name into the entry box under "Device Name."

First Time Set-Up

If this is the first time you have ever used the FreeOTP Authenticator app, you will be prompted to set up your first account.

Download and install the FreeOTP Authenticator app from the Google Play Store.

You may be prompted to allow the authenticator permission to access your camera, files, and media. Select the "Continue" button.

Apple Keychain Passwords


You can setup up your mobile authenticator with Apple Keychain Passwords. Please follow "Step One" and "Step Two" below to complete the first-time set-up process.

 

Step One: Ensure that your "fsw.edu" account is stored within your passwords

Before setting up your authenticator, please ensure that you already have your "fsw.edu" account held within your passwords. You can check this by following the steps below:

Open the "Settings" app on your iPhone.

Scroll down and select "Passwords."

Then, in the search bar at the top, type in "fsw.edu."

If your fsw.edu account appears (as shown above), please scroll down to the "First Time Set-Up" section and select a method to set up your authenticator in Apple Keychain Passwords. If your fsw.edu account does not appear, please follow the steps below to add your "fsw.edu" account before choosing a first time set-up method and completing the first time set-up:

 
How to add an account to "Passwords."

On the "Passwords" page within the "Settings" app, click the "+" icon in the upper right-hand corner.

Then (1) type in "fsw.edu" in the "Website" entry box, type in your FSW username in the "User Name" entry box, and type in your FSW Portal password in the "Password" entry box. Then (2) tap "Done."

Now that you have your "fsw.edu" account stored within your passwords, please scroll down to the "First Time Set-Up" section and select a method to set up your authenticator in Apple Keychain Passwords.

 

Step Two: Choose a first-time set-up method and follow the steps to set up your authenticator

Please choose one of the two first-time set-up methods below to set up your authenticator in Apple Keychain Passwords.

 

First Time Set-Up: Method One

Open the "Camera" app on your iPhone.

Point your phone at the QR code on the login page and tap on "Add Verification Code in Passwords."

Next, (1) type "fsw.edu" into the search bar to search for your account, and then (2) tap on your "fsw.edu" account when it appears.

Your 6-digit verification code (or "one-time code") will now display in the box under "VERIFICATION CODE" on this page.

With the authenticator now set up, go back to your FSW "Mobile Authenticator Setup" page, enter the verification code (or "one-time code") into the entry box under "One-time code," and enter a device name into the entry box under "Device Name."

Click "Submit" to complete your setup of MFA for FSW.

Whenever you log in to an FSW Account, you will be prompted to provide a newly generated code within the "fsw.edu" account page in your Apple Keychain Passwords. You can access this page and locate the 6-digit verification code by going to the "Settings" app on your iPhone, scrolling down, and selecting "Passwords," searching for your "fsw.edu" account in the search bar, and then tapping on your "fsw.edu" account when it appears. A new 6-digit code will be generated on this page in the box under "VERIFICATION CODE" every 30 seconds. Please type in the 6-digit code into the "One-time code" entry box within the 30-second window, or wait until the new code appears. (It is referred to as a "One-time code" because it is a code that is valid for only one login session).

 

First Time Set-Up: Method Two

Open the "Settings" app on your iPhone.

Next, (1) type "fsw.edu" into the search bar to search for your account, and then (2) tap on your "fsw.edu" account when it appears.

When the camera opens, point your phone at the QR code on the login page.

Frequently Asked Questions


  • Is Multi-Factor Authentication required to get into my college PC or laptop? 
    • No, it is only required to access an application that uses the College's Single Sign On (SSO), such as Canvas, Portal, or Banner.
  • Do I need to use it every time I log in?
    • Yes, you will. It's part of the extra security layer that helps protect our entire FSW community. 
  • How do I request a USB Dongle?
  • Can I use a USB Dongle and App Authenticator?
    • Yes, enhancements have been developed to allow the use of both.
  • Do I need a Device Name?
    • It is not required, but it's a good habit to name the device with a brief identifiable name you can identify quickly in the future.
  • What Multi-Factor Authentication method is best for me?
    • That’s a great question and one of personal preference. We are providing multiple options to choose the one(s) that is most convenient for you. Your options are:
      • Mobile phone app
        • Flexible
        • Requires your phone/device to be with you at all times to access college applications
        • Requires you to use your device
      • Google Chrome extension
        • Convenient
        • It has to be installed on the machine you are using to access the applications.  If it is a different machine, it might not have the authenticator extension app installed.
        • It can be used in conjunction with the mobile phone app
      • USB Dongle
        • Requires no use of personal devices
        • You can use the other authentication methods as well now alongside this option.
        • It cannot be used through a remote desktop session (RDS).  
  • Will I be able to manage my own devices, or am I required to work through the Information Technology helpdesk?
    • You can currently manage your MFA account through the FSW Portal. There you can add, remove, and review the devices associated with your MFA account.
  • I get an error message when trying to set up an authenticator
