Adding extra time or attempts for online exams

Making adjustments to student's quiz settings to allow for required accommodations such as additional attempts or extra time should be done after receiving a Letter of Accommodation from the Office of ADAptive Services. Usually, the accommodation is for additional time on quizzes or for the student to take the exam in an alternate location with a proctor during regular class time with the additional time allotted.

  1. Log-in to Canvas
  2. Select the section the referenced student attends
  3. Within that section navigate to the Quizzes section:
Canvas dashboard menu to selected course with the Quizzes option highlighted for selection
  4. Locate and select the first quiz which needs adjusting. Please note every quiz/exam the student with accommodations will be taking will need adjustment.
  5. Within the quiz under the "Related Items" section select the option titled "Moderate This Quiz".
Graphic showing the view within a published quiz, focus shows a 30 minute time limit, no multiple attempts, and the options under Related Items.
  6. The moderate quiz page will load and will list all the students enrolled in the course assigned to take that quiz.
  7. Locate the student that needs the additional time and/or attempts and select the pencil icon located near their name.
  8. A box titled "Student Extensions" will appear. Only place the exceptions past the original settings within these areas.
    • Within the example Quiz 1 it was originally set to have a time limit of thirty minutes and only one attempt. For this example, The Letter of Accommodation states the student will need an additional sixty minutes for a total of ninety minutes on the exam.

  9. The "Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt" setting is optional but may help reduce the need for the adjustment of the due date and time if additional attempts are needed for the student past the original due date and time.
  10. After making the adjustments select the Save button.

NOTE:

  • Extra time does not need to be added to quizzes with no time limit.
  • If the due date has passed for the student who will need an Extra Attempt, then modify the "Student Extensions" settings for that student by check-marking the "Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt" setting and selecting Save.
