FSW is legally and ethically obligated to protect the confidentiality of student records. Students have the right to request that directory information about them not be disclosed. Students who request exclusion of directory information are referred to as confidential. Students may request confidential status because of serious, even dangerous, circumstances. It is critical their absolute privacy be protected in every situation.
In carrying out our responsibilities at FSW, faculty and staff members use excluded directory information only as necessary to meet the direct educational needs of the student; faculty and staff members are not to reveal excluded directory information to anyone who does not need it to complete official college duties directly related to the student's educational needs. This restriction applies to all forms of communication, both written and verbal.
In Banner, when accessing a record for a student who has requested exclusion of directory information and is confidential, a yellow flag will pop up in the upper right corner of the Banner screen, indicating "Warning: Information about this person is confidential." Additionally, on every Banner screen near the student's name, faculty and staff members see "Confidential."
However, there is not a way to recognize a “Confidential” student in Canvas. This must be created for FSW’s faculty members to know if and when a student in a Canvas course is Confidential.
